On Saturday afternoon, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick strapped on the pads. Like LeGarrette Blount snowplowing through the Indianapolis Colts, Belichick had his way with a media that has berated the Patriots since the final whistle of the AFC Championship. Belichick’s detailed explanation and overall performance in the press conference could be very beneficial for the Patriots.
It’s too early to say that the Patriots are out of the woods, but they certainly gained some ground in what has to be viewed as one of the most memorable press conferences of the century. Belichick’s detailed explanation of the Patriots’ internal study felt like a high school physics class; his diction will make entertaining sound bytes for years to come.
One cannot argue against science. Like the guy or not, one cannot say that Belichick was speaking nonsense. That the Patriots’ footballs were 12.5 PSI in what Belichick called “a controlled environment” but then were affected by the climactic conditions has the potential to be the explanation behind DeflateGate, as long as the NFL’s investigation parallels said findings.
For those saying that the Colts’ footballs should have been deflated too considering that they were in the same conditions, ponder this: what if the Colts inflated their 12 balls at 13.5 PSI? If the Patriots’ balls dropped one to one and half PSI, rendering them below the benchmark of 12.5, then the Colts would have done the same in theory, putting them at 12 or 12.5 PSI, on the bottom tier of what is legal.
Know this: if Belichick’s explanation is true, as it appears to be, then the Patriots will be standing very tall while the mainstream sports media and the masses of Cheatriots-chanters will look silly.
Besides providing a clear, smart explanation, Belichick seamlessly transitioned the attention toward Super Bowl XLIX. While the rest of us will still be caught up in DeflateGate, you can bet that a fire has been lit under the entire Patriots. The Seattle Seahawks are going to have a group of very, very motivated players and coaches on their hands.
Should the Pats be victorious on Feb. 1 and the NFL ruling line up with Belichick’s account, the Patriots will be in very green pastures in terms of reputation and legacy.
