New offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will certainly have his work cut out for him as he now turns his attention to fixing the offensive struggles of the New York Jets. This is a team that couldn’t score touchdowns if they were just a yard away from the goal line. Without a consistent quarterback in place and a lack of offensive weapons, the Jets ranked 32nd in the NFL last season in passing yards at just 184.1 yards per game. One of the biggest reasons the Jets had an offensive debacle last season was because, quite simply, quarterback Geno Smith isn’t ready just yet.
Whether you believe in him or not, Smith needs a ton of work before he’s ready to be a starter in the league again. The Jets shouldn’t expect to have him be a starter in 2015 and should simply put him on a developmental plan and make him a backup for now. Let’s face it, Smith was thrown to the wolves way before he was ready or even educated enough to at least have a shot at being successful.
Unfortunately, the Jets have always had an issue of developing quarterbacks for long-term success, however, they might have found success with Smith. You see, he needs to be put in a system of support, understanding and, above all else, making sure he is properly coached and trained to be a good quarterback. Gailey has had a very good history of being able to get the best out of his players and play to their strengths, so this bodes very well for him to improve.
Being a quarterback is as much mental as it is physical, and Smith and his confidence to be a quality starter have probably been destroyed over the past few years. He had signs of being a very good option to be the next franchise quarterback of the Jets, but many look at him and immediately remember all his unfortunate interceptions and turnovers.
What exactly will help turn around the career of Smith? Gailey will surely work with him towards rebuilding his confidence and working on his mechanics. The talent is there, it just needs to be harvested the right way in a positive environment with him on the backseat for now. The Jets have completely rebuilt their coaching and will work on creating a much better identity over the next few years with their new regime. This no doubt has to be the time to re-evaluate Smith and put him on a plan of redemption.
Overall, Gailey is exactly what Smith needs to get his career back on track. The Jets should give him a year or so off and bring in a veteran quarterback to develop him from the sidelines. Smith would thrive by getting a fresh restart on how to go about things and watch the game he loves to play with a clipboard at hand learning. It would work wonders for not only his career, but his confidence; then, maybe he can be the great quarterback everyone envisioned him to be for the Jets. All it takes is a little time, patience and, above all else, someone with the experience and leadership of Gailey to make him become a better quarterback.
