Another day, another DeflateGate controversy. Bill Belichick’s science lesson of a press conference on Saturday afternoon was one of the stranger things to happen in the NFL with the Super Bowl looming just over a week away. Now, after the latest news, the New England Patriots’ already hard to believe story of how only their footballs became deflated is holding less and less weight by the day.

Fox Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer tweeted the above “breaking news” early Monday afternoon to throw the latest wrench into the DeflateGate controversy. It’s clear the NFL will not quit until they have whatever answer they are looking for. If it turns out to be true that the locker room attendant did indeed tamper with the footballs after taking them from the officials’ locker room, it will be increasingly impossible to believe that he wasn’t told to do so by Tom Brady or another member of the Patriots’ staff.
It’s sad and frustrating this story has overshadowed the Super Bowl, when instead we could be breaking down the great matchup and discussing the seemingly endless amount of storylines that exist for next Sunday’s big game. The league is doing it’s job by making sure one of it’s premier teams is playing by the rules, even if deflating footballs had a minimal impact on the outcome of the Patriots 45-7 AFC Championship victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
Even if the NFL somehow proves, however unlikely, that the Patriots knowingly cheated, it’s hard to fathom that the Patriots would be punished, especially if they win the Super Bowl. All eyes are now on Roger Goodell to see when and how DeflateGate will come to its merciful conclusion.
