The Pro Bowl is a joke of an event. It’s a disgrace to even really call it a football. But the most important thing about it is that players who had great seasons are commemorated for their individual efforts. In the 2014 season, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning was absolutely snubbed.
To be fair, the NFC had a heavy quarterback class. Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and Drew Brees all put up astounding numbers this season. But Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford only threw for 19 touchdowns. And the Pro Bowl’s MVP, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles, didn’t play for the entire second half of the 2014 regular season.
How can a guy who didn’t play for eight games straight get in the Pro Bowl? How can an average quarterback like Andy Dalton even qualify as well? And how come Odell Beckham Jr., who only got in later as a reserve starter, was selected No. 4 overall in the draft order for Michael Irvin‘s team? The whole process of determining who gets to be in the Pro Bowl is utterly pointless. Fan voting is the most ridiculous way to determine a winner. An individual can vote for a particular player on countless devices. How is that a fair representation of who gets into the Pro Bowl?
This is exactly how players like Manning get snubbed. Manning put up some of his best numbers of his career for the Giants this season and has been selected for the Pro Bowl on three different occasions in the past. His career-best completion percentage of 63.1 and his 30-to-14 touchdown-to-interception ratio should have put him in with ease.
Unfortunately Manning and Giants fans are all too used to the under-appreciation of this great quarterback. The good news is Manning likely doesn’t even care that he wasn’t selected for the Pro Bowl. He’ll spend his extra time working in the offseason to be the best he can be at the start of the 2015 season. With the explosive Beckham, the return of Victor Cruz and a healthier offensive line, there’s a great chance that Manning’s 2015 campaign will be another great season to remember.
