Miami Dolphins Have Perfect Opportunity To Revamp Receiving Corps In 2015 NFL Draft

If there ever was an offseason for the Miami Dolphins to completely restructure their receiving corps, this is it. Yes, I know that the Dolphins tried it a few years ago by bringing in Mike Wallace and Brandon Gibson, but I think we can all agree that it didn’t pan out as Miami had planned. With a ton of talented wide receivers in the upcoming draft, the Dolphins have a chance to start fresh.
Gibson and Brian Hartline are most likely not returning next season. Neither receiver has lived up to his contract, and cutting both would free up millions in cap space. That leaves the elephant in the room, Wallace’s discontent, as the lone question mark going into the 2015 offseason.
Wallace’s contract is nothing short of a nightmare at this point. While it may be best for both sides to part ways if player and administration can’t reconcile, Wallace’s massive salary makes him virtually untradeable, and the massive cap hit that the Dolphins would have to take to release him appears too much to swallow. So if Wallace is on the team next season, what is Miami’s next move?
The answer is simple: replace Gibson and Hartline. Jarvis Landry quickly made himself Ryan Tannehill’s favorite target, and Rishard Matthews has shown flashes of potential; but that still leaves two glaring holes in the receiver corps.
Elite prospects like Kevin White, DeVante Parker, Jaelen Strong and Sammie Coates will most likely be available when the Dolphins pick in the first round, and under the radar guys like Phillip Dorsett, Rashad Greene, Dorial Green-Beckham and Nelson Agholor will be there on day two. Even deeper in the draft, Miami could strike gold with the likes of Tyler Lockett and Jamison Crowder, giving the Dolphins a number of choices to help fill the receiver ranks.
It may take some time for the young receivers to develop, but if the Dolphins use their draft picks wisely and select the right guys, the Miami receiving corps could be among the league’s best. With a stable of new weapons for Tannehill to target, the sky is the limit for what the team can accomplish. But if the Dolphins elect to pass on what could prove to be the deepest wide receiver draft in recent memory, there is no hope for improvement.
