Media day for Super Bowl XLIX is finally here and rolling. Many fans were expecting plenty of questions for the New England Patriots players pertaining to deflate-gate, and everyone was curious to hear from Seattle Seahawks players. One player we weren’t sure we would hear from was Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.
Well, we heard from him. And it was about all we expected.
Lynch opened up his interview with a very blunt statement: “I’m here so I won’t get fined.” He then continued to proceed through four and a half minutes of merely responding with “I’m only here so I won’t get fined” to every question asked. By now we’re used to his one-line answers such as “thanks for asking” and “my stomach’s fine, thanks for asking.”
Throughout this past season, Lynch was fined $100,000 for refusing to speak with the media. If he missed his Super Bowl media obligations, the fine was going to be much more. How much more you ask? The NFL threatened to fine him $500,000.
Don’t worry, Lynch; you can keep your half a million. All he’s obligated to do is make himself available and he did just that. He just decided to troll the media once again, and from a personal standpoint, I loved every second of it.
It’s a real wonder how the league will respond to Lynch’s latest antics. And will the media continue to pursue him? Even by responding with basically nothing for anybody to work with, he still makes headlines.
I understand that NFL players make a large amount of money (maybe too much money) and the least they can do is speak with the media. It’s a small price to pay to live a life of luxury. But when it comes to a guy like Lynch, I don’t really care what he has to say. I just want to watch him continue to run over defenses.
So back off Roger Goodell.
