Dez Bryant Is The Only FA Who Matters For Dallas Cowboys

When you look at the Dallas Cowboys and where they are in regards to their wide receivers and tight ends this offseason, things are already set for the most part. They have their stalwart in Jason Witten locked up, as well as his eventual replacement in Gavin Escobar, and they even have their third tight end in James Hanna signed through 2015.

As far as the receivers go, they have a game-breaker in Terrance Williams who is only entering his third year in the league, and they have high hopes for soon-to-be second-year receiver Devin Street. The team hopes that he can eventually be their replacement for Dwayne Harris, their fourth receiver who also handles punts and kickoffs for them and is an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Slot receiver Cole Beasley has turned into a dangerous weapon himself, as his size and speed makes him a difficult player to track when he’s running amongst the trees and killing defenses with key third down pickups. He is a restricted free agent this offseason, so the Cowboys should have no issue in bringing him back for 2015.

The one problem lies with Dez Bryant, easily the biggest signing of the past decade for the Cowboys. He has proven himself to be one of, if not the best receiver in the NFL, and he certainly deserves to be paid like one. The freakish play he made in the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers proves that he is a one-of-a-kind player as the league had no choice but to rule his catch as incomplete simply because they had never seen a player pull off a play that athletic before.

Who else in the league can pull off a high jump, catch the ball at its highest point against perfect coverage, switch the ball to one hand, and then reach for the goal line all in one motion? No one!

It’s that kind of athleticism and dominant play that can lead this team to its first Super Bowl in 20 years, but it’s also that kind of play that will cost Jerry Jones a pretty penny to keep him around. Whether he admits it publicly or not, Jones doesn’t want to commit a large sum of money to a player long-term who hasn’t quite figured out how to keep his personal life in check.

While the reports of his incidents are relatively light in nature, there is still a fear that increased money will only feed into his self-destructive personality.

So Jones is hoping to sign Bryant to a team-friendly deal that will provide him some insurance in case things get out of hand. However, now is not the time for conservative Jerry to surface; now is the time for the “let’s draft Johnny Manziel” Jerry to come out.

The gambler, as he likes to call himself, is the person the Cowboys need when it comes to signing Bryant, because both Bryant and his camp know that they hold all of the cards in this negotiation, and they will not be looking to do the Cowboys any favors this time around.

The Cowboys and their offense are in desperate need of a receiver who can take over a game at any moment, and the good news for them is they already has one in Bryant. Jerry has been searching for this kind of player ever since Michael Irvin retired, and he must do everything in his power to lock up Dez long-term so that he can focus on their other areas of need.
