Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is arguably one of the best players in the NFL today. Watt has developed his game to a point where he may possibly go down in history as one of the best defensive players in football. His 2014 season was packed with impressive statistics, highlight plays and more media attention than anyone could’ve expected.
Early on in the season, there were talks about Watt being in line for MVP honors. He ended his season with five touchdowns, 19 assisted tackles and 20.5 sacks. The 2014 season brought Watt his second 20.5 sack season, which was a first for the NFL; no other player has ever recorded multiple 20-plus sack seasons. That record alone heat up the MVP conversation, but because of the Texans’ 2014 season best being described as just okay, Watt may be out of the MVP running for good. The Texans’ 2014 season ended with a 9-7 record, substantially better than the previous season of 2-14, but because they couldn’t fight their way into the playoffs, Watt won’t be named NFL MVP.
Watt’s chances to be named MVP were already slim, as he was the only defensive player in the conversation. There have only been two defensive players to ever win the MVP award, and the last one was Lawrence Taylor nearly 30 years ago. Taylor’s New York Giants won the championship in that season, something Watt’s Texans will not do this season.
The Texans couldn’t even make it into the playoffs this season. Watt is in the race with Aaron Rodgers and Demarco Murray, two players whose teams did make it to the playoffs. As deserving as Watt is, the MVP award probably won’t go to the Texan. His incredible season is definitely MVP worthy, but when he is in direct competition with offensive players who helped to lead their teams to the post season, the MVP chants may have fallen on deaf ears.
