Super Bowl media days are largely a waste of time as nothing substantial ever materializes. But Super Bowl XLIX‘s media day took place on Tuesday, and New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount was spot-on with his comments regarding the Seattle Seahawks’ defense, saying the following:
“I don’t care about them being the top defense, that doesn’t bother me. They were good enough to get here, just like we were good enough to get here. They’re not immortal. They can be beaten. Obviously they’re a pretty good defense. They were good enough to get here, they were good enough to get here last year, so we are going to put a plan together to hopefully make sure we come out victorious.”
People in the Patriots’ organization, especially players, do not normally provide such bold statements publicly, which is not a bad thing. There is no reason to provide extra motivation or bulletin board material prior to a game. But the comments by Blount were not inflammatory and they were right on the mark. He admits the Seahawks’ defense is good enough to get to back-to-back Super Bowls, but he remains confident that the Patriots have also been good enough to reach the biggest game of the season. Blount’s teammates and New England fans should love what he had to say.
Blount didn’t guarantee a win or call out anyone on Seattle’s defense. He only expressed his opinion that the Patriots are worthy of being in the Super Bowl too and that the Seahawks’ defense is not invincible. Blount, and the rest of the Patriots players and coaching staff, should feel this way. No player or coach should have any doubt in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. Everyone on the Patriots’ roster and staff should feel that if they prepare correctly, they will be the team that is holding the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night.
