The Dallas Cowboys didn’t end the season with a Super Bowl victory, which is clearly what they were in search of, but they still had a solid season to say the least. So did RB DeMarco Murray. As a result, he was named the Offensive Player of the Year, which was clearly the right choice.
Although many question marks surrounded Murray and Co. entering the year, he came in from Day 1 and just ran away with the ball. Seriously, he ended up rushing for 1,845 yards and 13 touchdowns. By my count, that was way more than anyone else — well, at least the rushing yards.
For the record, Le’Veon Bell had the next most rushing yards with 1,361. Off of that stat alone, Murray was clearly the best running back in 2014.
There were plenty of great quarterbacks who were deserving of the award this year, but can you imagine where Dallas would have been without Murray? Just thinking about it hurts my head.
For what it’s worth, Murray’s Cowboys finished with a 12-4 record this season and they were one of the best teams in the NFL. Dallas came up short in the playoffs, but so did every other team that made it not named New England or Seattle.
Players like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Andrew Luck all had great years, but Murray was still the correct choice when it came to OPOY.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Murray this offseason, but he was the best of the best this season, which is really all that matters tonight.
