Once free agency comes, many can expect the usual frenzy of teams trying to make big moves in hopes of landing top free agents that can contribute immediately next season. The New York Jets are in a very good position this year to be big spenders come free agency as they have plenty of salary cap room to make some big moves. It’s no secret the Jets had no real identity on offense and were barely able to score touchdowns against opponents. When it comes down to it, the Jets simply don’t have that superstar wide receiver that most teams do that adds a clutch dimension on offense. That’s why they should absolutely make a strong effort to pursue Demaryius Thomas in free agency this year.
While many fans were excited to see the Jets acquire wide receiver Eric Decker last year in free agency, truth of the matter is he really isn’t a true No. 1 receiver. Many were fully aware he didn’t have the skill set to truly be the next big thing on the Jets, but knew he’d thrive in more of a supporting role. Without a true No. 1 receiver on the roster to complement him, the Jets paid dearly for it on offense as they were unable to have any kind of consistent momentum on offense last season.
Things could change immediately should the Jets land Thomas and reunite him with his former teammate back when they played together with the Denver Broncos. What’s great is that since Decker and Thomas not only played together, but are actually close friends, one better believe Decker will be chiming in his ear to try and bring him to the Jets if an opportunity presents itself.
The Jets might have been terrible last season, but make no mistake about it, they are on the right path to bring some competitiveness to the organization. With a whole new regime and mentality that will swarm across the franchise this upcoming season, it’s a new era of Jets football. Bringing Thomas into the mix would only solidify that things will be changing for the better over the next few years with the Jets.
Should the Broncos not franchise tag him or sign him to a long-term deal, Thomas would be one of the top free-agent wide receivers in the free agency market. If he reaches it, the Jets know he would be an instant game-changer that would thrive on the team and also elevate Decker’s gamer, just like they did with the Broncos.
Of course, they won’t have a future Hall of Fame quarterback like Peyton Manning throwing their way, which changes everything, but the Jets will surely address their quarterback situation over the next few months. Whether that involves getting a top free-agent quarterback or addressing it at the 2015 NFL Draft, the Jets will indeed make strides to bring some electricity to their offense by adding some new and exciting pieces.
Overall, Thomas would bring much to the Jets, including some much needed pop to their offense by being a top threat against opposing teams. The Jets need to be aggressive in free agency to infuse some better talent on their wide receiver corps as Thomas would be just the right athlete to turn their offense around into an effective and successful one.
