Amari Cooper will be the first wide receiver taken in this year’s NFL Draft, but don’t feel too bad for the team that drafts Kevin White. They will be getting a top-flight receiving prospect who can become a superstar in the NFL.
White has the size of an NFL receiver at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds. The senior took an unlikely route to West Virginia. Because of grades, he was forced to play football at Lackawanna College before becoming a Mountaineer.
After a subpar junior year where White only hauled in 35 catches for 507 yards, he improved exponentially in 2014 with one of the best receiving performances of the year. He finished with 109 receptions for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns, in part due to the improved Mountaineer offense under Clint Trickett.
With the NFL becoming a more offensive league, having dynamic playmakers on the outside is as important as ever, and White is definitely one of those. There is plenty to like about White’s game. He has the size and is supremely athletic. He has large hands that allow him to high-point the ball and make difficult catches in traffic.
But there are a couple of things that I will be looking forward to seeing at the NFL Combine in a week. First, I would like to see his quickness and lateral agility. White has shown ability to shake cornerbacks in press coverage, but the wide-open offense may be the cause of that. The second interest I have is his 40 time. There have been discrepancies with it as his time has been measured as low as a 4.39 and as high as a 4.49. I hate to say it, but that may be the difference between White being a top-10 pick or a top-20 pick. White has shown the ability to run away from college defenders, but can he run away from professional defenders?
Either way, White is sure to be impressive at the Combine, and it should solidify him being the second wide receiver taken in April’s draft.
