With the poor performance by the Chicago Bears defense over the past couple of seasons, it’s evident that the organization’s primary focus will be on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. With the additions of head coach John Fox and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, arrows are pointing to the possibility of switching to a 3-4 scheme. Assuming that this change comes to life, here are some rumored free agents the Bears might target.

It’s no secret that the Bears’ play at safety has been among the league’s worst. LaRon Landry, who was recently released by the Indianapolis Colts, has eight years NFL experience, and is a big hitter in the secondary and near the line of scrimmage.

Rey Maualuga is a savvy veteran who is familiar with both the 4-3 and the 3-4 alignments. There’s a good chance that the injury-riddled D.J. Williams won’t be back with Chicago in 2015. The 28-year-old Maualuga has the combination of youth and experience the Bears could use for the revamping of their defense.

A 3-4 defense is only as successful as its pass rush. Jason Worilds has steadily improved over the past five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and has become a solid pass rusher. Worilds has tallied a total of 15.5 sacks over the past two seasons, and could make the potential transition to the 3-4 a bit easier for the Bears.

If in fact Chicago does switch to a 3-4 defensive alignment, Terrance Knighton should be near the top of the Bears’ free agent list. The 6-foot-3, 331-pound nose tackle has the size and strength to anchor a defensive line and could vastly improve an already solid run defense.

It’s inevitable that the Bears won’t re-sign Chris Conte. Having played all four years of his NFL career for Fox in the Mile High City, seeing Rahim Moore move to the Windy City wouldn’t come as a big surprise. Moore, who tied for the team lead with four interceptions in 2014, would greatly improve Chicago’s secondary.
