The Atlanta Falcons have decided to release veteran running back Steven Jackson on Thursday in a move that is completely understandable. Despite being one of the best players of his generation at his position, there is no question his career is likely at its conclusion.

It is sad that the possible end of Jackson will occur without him ever having a shot at a Super Bowl ring, especially since the reason he signed with the Falcons in 2013 was because he believed the organization was his best chance at winning one. Unfortunately, Jackson agreed to terms with a team that was on its last legs after a crushing loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the 2012 NFC Championship Game. Instead of taking another stab at a title contest, Atlanta followed it up with 10 wins in two seasons.

It would be one thing if Jackson was playing at a high level, but the reality is his average of 3.6 yards per carry on 347 attempts is not what the Falcons had in mind when they signed him. Even though he found the end zone 12 times in two seasons, he failed to deliver the powerful punch from the backfield Atlanta desperately needed. In fact, his two seasons with the Falcons was the first time he did not rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season since his rookie year in 2004.

Fans may not understand the move considering Jackson is the best player on the current roster to hold the running back position. With that said, paying him $3.5 million in 2015 is simply not worth the production he has given, especially since injury concerns will be a growing concern.

There is always the possibility another team takes a chance on Jackson, but the reality he has a worn down body in a league that continues to get younger at running back.
