On Monday, it was announced that the Detroit Lions had decided against slapping Ndamukong Suh with the franchise tag, essentially sending him to the open market. With Suh all but guaranteed to hit free agency, the Oakland Raiders are in perfect position to land the dominant defensive tackle.
The three teams with the money and interest to seriously pursue Suh are the Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While all three teams are far from ideal landing spots for the abrasive Suh, the Raiders present the best option.
Not only do the Raiders have more than enough money to sign Suh, but they also offer the more ideal destination for a player who desperately wants to enhance his brand. When discusses about Suh hitting free agency first started, teams like the New York Giants and New York Jets were mentioned due to their being in big markets.
While Oakland isn’t exactly the biggest market, it’s better than Jacksonville or Tampa Bay and there’s a very good chance the Raiders could be heading south soon. The team moving to Los Angeles would certainly be appealing for a player like Suh.
Known as an abrasive, hard-nosed player, Suh would also fit perfectly with the culture that surrounds the Raiders. The Silver and Black are a diehard group of fans that embrace the darker side of the sport. If Suh signed with Oakland, he’d immediately be seen as somewhat of a God among Raiders fans. You just know that would be perfect for his overinflated ego.
Plus, he’d get to work with a proven defensive coach in Jack Del Rio while playing alongside promising young NFL talents such as Khalil Mack, Sio Moore and Justin Ellis.
No one knows for sure what will happen when free agency opens on March 10. The only thing that is for sure is that the Raiders will be pitching hard for Suh to come to Oakland.
Between the location, money and promising group of young players, the Raiders offer Suh the best package. Expect to see him in silver and black before long.
