Dwayne Bowe has caught his last touchdown for the Kansas City Chiefs. Wait. No he didn’t, because no Chiefs receiver caught a touchdown this past season. So I guess his last touchdown for the Chiefs was two years ago.
I think I just proved why Bowe needs to be cut.
NFL’s Ian Rapoport has reported that the Chiefs are trying to trade the wide receiver, but if that doesn’t happen then the team will cut him to the surprise of no one.
One player not yet on the free agent market: #Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe. The expectation is that he will be, unless Chiefs can trade him.

Bowe is set to have a $14 million cap hit in 2015 which is a ridiculous amount of money for a wide receiver who’s 30 years old and is coming off a season where he didn’t catch a single touchdown. The Chiefs would save $5 million in cap space if they straight out released Bowe, however, that does include $9 million in dead money. But with the massive franchise tag the Chiefs slapped on their Pro Bowl linebacker/player most likely to break the sack record (I’m calling it here) Justin Houston, they need as much cap space as they can get.
It would be stupid of the Chiefs to keep Bowe around or really even try to restructure his contract to reduce his cap hit. Obviously the Chiefs just need to restock their receiving corps after not a single wideout caught a touchdown last season, and you can bet that with the money freed up by releasing or trading Bowe, the Chiefs will heavily pursue a wide receiver in free agency. It’s also likely they will draft one with their No. 18 overall pick in the 2015 draft.
No teams have been rumored to be interested in the receiver via trade, so most likely the Chiefs will cut Bowe and accept the dead money. It’s what they have to do. Bowe is still a productive receiver and could be a good second or third option for a team, but he’s no longer a No. 1 guy and is certainly not worth the massive $56 million deal he signed two years ago. Thus, it’s time to go, Mr. Bowe. And yes, I did just end this with a rhyme.
