According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, LeSean McCoy just inked a new five-year contract with the Buffalo Bills, and according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, $26.5 million out of this deal will be guaranteed. This is good news for McCoy, but bad news for Buffalo.
McCoy compiled nearly 1,500 rushing attempts during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, and if you were to extrapolate this workload another five seasons, the running back would be approaching 3,000 carries.
3,000 is a great number of hits for a professional baseball player, but 3,000 carries is rarefied amongst NFL tailbacks. If he were to accomplish this arduous feat, McCoy would basically have to file for his football AARP card by the end of this contract. Forget being just a third-down back on the back-end, by year three or four, McCoy would become an NFL Keith Van Horn.
McCoy exhibited his first year of decline in 2014, after two seasons of surging to prominence. What he has left in the tank is mysterious as best, and a rejuvenated season may not be necessitated by a change of scenery. In fact, playing in even colder weather could prove devastating.
As if he were the Dusty Baker of NFL football coaches, Rex Ryan loves his running backs, and he loves running them into the ground. McCoy could muster two more high-level seasons, but it’s the back-end of the contract that should be worrisome for both parties at play.
Rex Ryan did everything short of burning the New York Jets to the ground, and it looks like McCoy will be the Bills’ first log on the fire.
