Kansas City Chiefs Rumors: Dwayne Bowe’s Departure Opens Up Receiving Corps

Dwayne Bowe rumored to be cut Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver

Jason Bridge-USA TODAY Sports

Being part of an offense that yielded no touchdowns to a wide receiver is not a resume builder. Adam Schefter has reported that Kansas City Chiefs wideout Dwayne Bowe may be released sometime this week.

To say Bowe’s numbers took a dip in 2014 would not be entirely correct. The Chiefs’ former deep threat has been in decline for the past three seasons. In 2010, Bowe hauled in 15 touchdowns, but in the four seasons following, he hadn’t even reached that total cumulatively. 2014 was an embarrassment, as Bowe adopted the Chiefs’ wide receiver M.O. and failed to catch a single touchdown pass.

Bowe used to be the jack of all trades, but now he is a master of none. The 6-foot-2 bygone burner now just burns up idle space on the gridiron. For Andy Reid and the Chiefs to climb the AFC West hierarchy, they’ll need to do more than just slow down the Denver Broncos. What the Chiefs need to find is speed on both sides of the ball, and this quickness needs to carry consistent production.

Bowe turned 30 last September, and the Chiefs have the made the right call in March. Two fumbles, zero touchdowns and just 60 receptions will not grab big dollar signs in NFL free agency. Freeing up most of the clutter from Bowe’s five-year, $56 million contract will allow the Chiefs to pursue a younger, more suitable wideout. Hopefully it’s one who can perhaps hold onto the ball and frequently find the end zone.
