Jameis Winston's Attorney Raises Huge Red Flag With Latest Comments

By Jerry Landry

When Jameis Winston isn’t bumbling off the field, his attorney David Cornwell is there to pick up the slack.

According to USA Today, Winston’s attorney let the following line leak on the record: “Jameis is ready to be an NFL quarterback on the field, but he is not ready to be an NFL player off the field.” Uh-oh.

This isn’t just a red flag, it’s a minefield. I’m sure America appreciates finally hearing some honesty from a lawyer, but is it really a part of the job description? Cornwell is a career-driven individual, right? Unless this is some strange psychological ploy that’ll take months to play out, I don’t see the upside in Cornwell saying this on behalf of his client.

Maybe it’s a publicity stunt worthy of AMC’s ‘Better Call Saul,’ and perhaps Cornwell is a huge fan. Through infamy or integrity, it’s still notoriety to a lawyer looking to build his brand; and erroneous allegations aside, Cornwell now has our attention.

What Cornwell also possesses is supreme confidence, and he’ll need it to walk off the ledge of career suicide. When asked whether or not Winston would be drafted No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cornwell paradoxically added this gem to the record: “Book it.”
