This Week 10 matchup brings together two teams seemingly headed in opposite directions. The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off of a thrilling overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys, while the Miami Dolphins are fresh off a 33-17 whooping from the Buffalo Bills.
Offensively, Miami has been just efficient enough these past few weeks. Save that massive explosion in Houston, Ryan Tannehill has moved the ball well enough, eclipsing 280 yards the past three games. The problem is that Tannehill hasn’t thrown a touchdown in two weeks and has turned the ball over three times. Rishard Matthews is cooling off from his hot start, and while Jarvis Landry continues to be heavily targeted, he’s not producing enough to make the needed impact. Tight end wise, Jordan Cameron is nowhere to be found.
Perhaps the only bright spot of the Miami attack is the resurgence of Lamar Miller. Since the bye, Miller has six touchdowns and is making plays all over the place.
Defensively, well, let’s just say it’s been less than ideal for Miami. The Dolphins’ run defense has regressed since last year, and they continue to give up big plays each week both by ground and air. They got absolutely torched last week in Buffalo, and the Eagles have the firepower to do that again.
The Eagles are optimistic that Sam Bradford and the offense are finally starting to click. Bradford finally took care of the ball and moved the offense. Jordan Matthews finally came to life with 133 yards and the game-winning score, although the rest of the receivers didn’t contribute much. That’s something that needs to be fixed moving forward.
The running game was brilliant again with DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews. Undoubtedly, they are the key to this offense, and keeping them on a roll is a must.
The Eagles’ defense has cooled off since their suffocating performance against the New York Giants. They were handled on the ground more than you would’ve liked, and they somehow managed to allow Matt Cassel to come close to 300 yards passing. They both bent and broke against an offense they should have stalled, but they hung in just long enough.
I see a high-scoring affair this week. Both defenses can be handled and both squads have offenses perfectly capable of scoring those frequent points. For Miami, I think they unleash Landry deeper downfield to open things up for Miller and force more single coverage on speedster Kenny Stills. I don’t think the Eagles let Miller get going on the ground, not after last week, so his damage will be in the vacated area underneath.
The Eagles will be tempted to dink and dunk again, but they must open it up and attack deep. The offensive line is clicking well enough so both Murray and Mathews should be effective again, and I think that will open things up. Who takes advantage of that? Whoever the third receiver is. Right now that’s Miles Austin, but it could be Nelson Agholor if he’s active. I have a feeling Riley Cooper sits this one out.
In the end, I think the plays will be there more for the Eagles, and they’re better built to run the clock out. I think they can protect a lead better than Miami and will do so in a shootout.
Prediction: Eagles 34, Dolphins 27
