On Monday morning, the New Orleans Saints fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan following a 47-14 drubbing at the hands of the Washington Redskins of all teams. Through Week 10, the Saints are dead last in the NFL, allowing 424.7 total yards and 31.5 points per game. Had the Saints made this move earlier in the season, it’s likely they could still be in playoff contention, but sitting at 4-6 after yesterday’s loss is likely too big of a hill to climb.

In the Saints’ six losses, the defense has allowed 31, 26, 27, 39, 34 and 47 points, which is an average of 34 per game. It’s been laughable how bad they’ve played this season, and the defensive coordinator is usually held responsible. But the Saints continued to drag their feet making a decision, and it’s going to come back and bite them.
There hasn’t been announcement as to who will take over the defensive play-calling for the Saints, but I would expect it to be Joe Vitt, who currently serves as the team’s assistant head coach and linebackers coach. Although Vitt has never held the title of defensive coordinator for the Saints, he filled in for Sean Payton as head coach during 2012 when Payton was suspended for his role in the bounty scandal.
As for Ryan, this may be the end of the road for him. Unless his brother has a soft spot in his heart and gives him a role in Buffalo, there’s likely no team that’s going to hire him based off of his recent performance.
