The Jacksonville Jaguars travel to Nashville this week to take on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday in a rematch of the Week 11 Thursday night game.
The Jaguars are coming off a disappointing 31-25 loss at home to the San Diego Chargers. After winning three out of four, the loss drops the Jaguars to 4-7 on the season and they find themselves two games back in the AFC South following wins by the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans last Sunday.
If the Jaguars want to get things back on track against the Titans, they will need improved play from quarterback Blake Bortles. The second-year signal-caller threw another costly interception against the Chargers on Sunday and has now thrown a pick in seven straight games. Unfortunately for Bortles, he will be without one of his top playmakers in wide receiver Allen Hurns. The Jaguars’ second-leading receiver suffered a concussion against the Chargers and is not expected to be available against the Titans.
Without Hurns, the Jaguars should continue to make tight end Julius Thomas a bigger part of the offense. He was targeted eight times and finished with five receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown in the first meeting with Tennessee. He had a career-high nine catches for 116 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s loss to the Chargers.
The Titans enter Sunday following a close loss to the Oakland Raiders 24-21 last Sunday. Tennessee is 2-9 on the season and have lost three consecutive games under interim coach Mike Mularkey. The Titans have also lost 11 straight home games.
It’s not all bad in Tennessee, as rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota is off to a good start in his career and provides hope for the future. The No. 2 overall pick in last May’s NFL Draft, Mariota has 16 touchdowns and just eight interceptions on the season.
Mariota’s favorite target is veteran tight end Delanie Walker. The Jaguars have had problems covering tight ends recently, with the Chargers’ Antonio Gates catching two touchdown passes last Sunday. Walker caught eight passes for 109 yards against the Jaguars two weeks ago, making him a player to watch this Sunday.
The Jaguars barely escaped with a victory when these teams met two weeks ago, relying on a 63-yard punt return by Rashad Greene to set up the winning score in a 19-13 victory. It should be another close game this time around.
Prediction: Jaguars 20, Titans 14
