Dallas Cowboys Should Give Kellen Moore a Chance to Play

Even the most delusional Dallas Cowboys fans have come to the realization that their 2015 season is over at this point. The only thing the players have to play for at this point is pride and the opportunity to pad their fantasy football stats. This Saturday’s game against the New York Jets could add a little motivation simply because it will be a nationally televised game, but after that the coaches and owner Jerry Jones should be looking to the future.

When quarterback Tony Romo comes back healthy next year, the Cowboys, with a little retooling, should once again be considered favorites to make it to the Super Bowl. But at age 35 and coming off of two back surgeries and a now three broken clavicles in recent years, it’s time for the team to address their future at the quarterback position.

Brandon Weeden made it abundantly clear that he couldn’t carry a team even for a short stretch, let alone a full season or two. And even though he only joined the team midseason, it looks as if Matt Cassel is not the answer either. Now having never thrown an NFL pass in a regular season game, it’s hard to believe that Boise St.’s Kellen Moore will be the solution either. With a 4-9 record, now is the time to find out.

I still believe that Cassel gives the Cowboys the best chance to win this week but if he struggles at all early on in this game, and the chances are high that he will considering the fact he is going against the No. 5 defense in the league, then he should be pulled in favor for Moore. Moore has been in offensive coordinator Scott Linehan’s system for a longer period of time and the coach has the utmost confidence in him since he was responsible for the Detroit Lions signing him out of college.

He threw for a ton of yards in college and honestly has nothing to lose at this point. So if he does get in the game, don’t expect him to be tentative. The last thing the Cowboys need to do is enter training camp next year not knowing what they have in Moore. If he goes out on Saturday and shows a little something, then maybe they don’t have to reach for a quarterback so high in the upcoming draft. But if he falls flat on his face, then they can move forward without any hesitation.
