The Philadelphia Eagles have fired head coach Chip Kelly with one game remaining in the 2015 NFL Season. The team announced that offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur would be the interim coach for the team’s final game against the New York Giants on Sunday. After two 10 win seasons to begin his NFL career, Kelly led the Eagles to a 6-9 record this season and it earned him his release.

Despite a 10-6 season in 2014, the Eagles missed the playoffs and the team was searching for ways to improve so that didn’t happen again. The major change was giving Kelly general manager duties in order for him to have the power to put together the roster with players he wanted. Immediately, Kelly traded away LeSean McCoy, let Jeremy Maclin walk, traded Nick Foles and released Evan Mathis. Instead of improving, the team got much worse and it can be directly correlated to Kelly’s roster decisions.

Now a free agent, Kelly will likely have a list of suitors for his services, although most at the college level. The one NFL job that could be a perfect fit is with the Tennessee Titans. The Titans drafted Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft after he left early from Oregon, Kelly’s job prior to the Eagles. There were reports that Kelly was willing to give up numerous first-round picks for Mariota prior to the draft, but the Titans wouldn’t budge. Now it seems like a match made in heaven.

Hopefully, this will knock some of the cockiness out of Kelly’s coaching style as he’s obviously not the genius he thought he was. It could be a great lesson for him heading into his next job.
