With their win today, the Philadelphia Eagles won on a few different levels. They saved themselves a trip to London next year. They answered the questions many fans had about how close this team was to turning things around. But most of all, they proved that firing Chip Kelly was the right thing to do.

Jeff Lurie had said that the Eagles could turn things around quickly, that their roster was good enough to play within any offense they had to work with. Naturally the concern was that Kelly’s flawed approach leaked into his personnel choices, and that a mini blowup of sorts was going to be needed.

But then Pat Shurmur came out and did the unthinkable: he put Sam Bradford directly under center and gave DeMarco Murray the ball. Next thing you know, 54 yards later, Murray is celebrating a touchdown run. I feel pretty comfortable saying that if that was Kelly, there would be no way you’d see that kind of formation or that kind of run. Most likely, Murray would have taken a shotgun handoff and maybe plowed ahead for a three-yard gain.

And then you look at the rest of the team.  The entire vibe of the team seemed different, like they were more relaxed and more focused. They seemed to move the ball much more comfortably, thanks to the running game that was finally tailored to each back. Of course the drops were still there, but  drops were the story of the Eagles this season.

It’s funny to think that the lack of synergy we saw all year from this team maybe wasn’t the team trying to figure it out. Perhaps, that funk was really because of Kelly. After watching the way this game played out today, I have to assume that was the case. Whatever it was this whole time, the fact remains that the Eagles looked the best today that they did all season, and that was without Kelly.
