5 Candidates to be Next New York Giants Head Coach

5 Candidates to be Next New York Giants Head Coach Brad Penner USA TODAY Sports
After a disappointing 6-10 campaign, and a fourth straight season without a playoff berth, Tom Coughlin stepped down as head coach of the New York Giants on Monday. The Giants now stand out as an appealing head coaching job, with a quarterback in place for instant success and solid, level-headed ownership. Here are five candidates to be the next Giants' head coach.

5. Kevin Sumlin

Texas A&M's downturn over the last couple seasons has taken some shine off Sumlin as a candidate to go to the next level. But Michael Silver of NFL Network has suggested Sumlin is "trying hard" to get to the NFL, and the Giants may be willing to give him an interview.

4. Josh McDaniels

McDaniels has a comfortable spot as New England Patriots' offensive coordinator, but his failed tenure as head coach of the Denver Broncos (2009-2010) is far enough in the past to put him on the radar as a candidate for teams with an opening. Jason La Canfora speculated that the Giants' job would be among the most appealing to McDaniels, but we'll see if there is mutual interest.

3. Chuck Pagano

Pagano is now without a contract to continue as Indianapolis Colts' head coach, and he is likely done pending a meeting with owner Jim Irsay. Pagano's defense-tilted experience and acumen could make him an appealing candidate for the Giants.

2. Ben McAdoo

Ben McAdoo Brad Penner USA TODAY Sports
The Giants' offensive coordinator has gotten the best from Eli Manning over the last two seasons, including a career-high 35 touchdown passes during the just-completed season, and the two-time Super Bowl MVP has nearly the same number of interceptions over that span (28) as he had in 2013 alone (27). There is some talk the Giants were grooming McAdoo as Coughlin's eventual successor, and that timetable may now be accelerated.

1. Sean Payton

Payton will presumably have some ability to pursue other opportunities, and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported he is "monitoring" the Giants' situation. The New Orleans Saints' head coach worked as quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator for four seasons (1999-2002) with the Giants, under Coughlin's predecessor Jim Fassel, so he's got some past ties to the organization.
