The New York Giants and Tom Coughlin parted ways on Black Monday, as the official word was that the longtime coach was stepping down for the better of the organization. Who knows if he willingly stepped down or not, but what we do know is that the Giants need a head football coach and that coach should a seasoned one.
The Giants’ coaching gig should be the most coveted job for willing candidates. They have an established star quarterback who still has at least three more good years left in him. They have a potential legend and incredible game-breaker at wide receiver in Odell Beckham Jr. Finally, they have great ownership. The Mara and Tisch families are not meddling owners at all. In an age where you see countless owners with power trips, the Giants’ are hands-off.
The next coach has to be an experienced guy. In a huge market like the New York area and for a storied franchise like the Giants, it could be very hard for a rookie head coach. The Giants hired a veteran coach in Coughlin and that worked out just fine. They must go the same route this time. Going by that, it will eliminate Ben McAdoo as an option. It would be great if the OC could stay on, but who knows if he’ll want to with a new coach or if the new coach would want him. It would lead to a total overhaul of a new Giants’ offense that has been solid since his takeover last season. However, it is a risk that has to be taken. McAdoo hasn’t been a head coach yet and doing so in New York first could be rough.
The Giants are about to enter a window were they have about three or four years to contend. It may not happen overnight as they have plenty of holes, but a veteran coach could certainly expedite the process and help change the culture of the roster just like that. A guy like Sean Payton could work just fine if the Giants want to part with a draft pick to get him from the New Orleans Saints. To take advantage of this window of still having Eli Manning, the Giants have to avoid any growing pains with a rookie head coach. They can’t afford a setback where the coach fails and they fire him in few seasons with Manning’s career coming to an end.
This is new for the Giants, as it’s been awhile since they had a coaching search. This is the biggest hire in franchise history. It has to be done right. The potential veteran coach will give the Giants a chance to restore the team’s pride. You will hear plenty of coaching candidates over the next week rumored to be an option, so hopefully the Giants only take a proven name under serious consideration. The state of the organization depends on it.
