The Detroit Lions‘ all-time leader in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns is reportedly considering retirement after only nine NFL seasons. Calvin Johnson and the Lions each released a statement that read:
“Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future,” Johnson said. “I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future.”
“We obviously have profound respect for Calvin and certainly understand and appreciate his decision to give proper thought and consideration to his football future,” the Lions said.
It’s hard to fathom that a player who just posted 88 receptions for 1,124 yards and nine touchdowns while being selected to his sixth-straight Pro Bowl appearance would think about hanging up the cleats. Reports are citing that injuries are the main reason behind Johnson considering retirement as his body has taken a significant beating over the years.
Even if Johnson were to return, it may not be with the Lions. He will count $24 million against the cap next season which is an extremely high number for a guy who isn’t the same player he was even two years ago. The Lions can save $11 million by cutting the All-Pro receiver, or they could ask he to take a pay cut which would seem unlikely.
If Johnson does walk away, he won’t be the first Lions player to retire at such a young age, as Barry Sanders did the exact same thing. Sanders had an opportunity to become the NFL’s all-time leading rusher had he only played a few more years, but he later let on that the Lions’ losing culture was a major factor in his decision to retire as well.
Here’s hoping that Johnson decides to return next season, as he’s a once-in-a-generation talent and it would be a great loss to the game if he hangs it up.
