Detroit Lions Can’t Give Up On Matthew Stafford

Case Keenum, Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel and Tyrod Taylor are all uninspiring quarterbacks.

They’re precisely the type of quarterback the Detroit Lions could end up with if they release Matthew Stafford.

The Lions have a solid player in Stafford. He’s got all the physical tools most quarterbacks dream of, and he showed tremendous improvement during Detroit’s revival in the second half of the season.

It didn’t matter, it is true that Detroit has no pressure. But Stafford showed that with the right offensive coordinator and gameplan, he can be a nightmare for opposing defenses.

Stafford’s 32 touchdown passes 97 quarterback rating are his best since 2011, and his 67.2 completion percentage is his best ever. If the Lions release him, they’re not guaranteed to get a solid starter, and with how vital the QB position is, Detroit can’t afford to go backwards.

Teams like the St. Louis Rams would have been much better off with just an average quarterback, let alone an exceptional talent like Stafford.

When the Arizona Cardinals were formidable last season, they completely tanked after Carson Palmer went down.

Sabotaging the QB position is detrimental. Detroit already needs to rebuild other critical positions like the offensive and defensive lines. Banishing Stafford would only lead to more ineptitude. This year’s draft class doesn’t really have any promising prospects.

Yeah, he needs to be better at points. Yes, his previous play was discouraging. But he’s still better than a lot of QBs out there, and that’s a party the Lions don’t want to join. Stafford is a QB Detroit can win with. If the Kansas City Chiefs are making the playoffs with Alex Smith, Detroit’s problems extend beyond their QB.
