The Miami Dolphins have been in the market for a head coach since firing Joe Philbin following a Week 4 loss to the New York Jets in London. After months of searching, the Dolphins have found their guy as the team announced that Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase had agreed to a four-year deal on Saturday morning.
Although he’s only 37 years old, Gase has been in the NFL since 2003 when he was a scouting assistant with the Detroit Lions. After five seasons with the Lions, Gase spent one year as an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers before moving on to the Denver Broncos where he would work with Peyton Manning who gave him some tremendous compliments.
“He’s an extremely hard worker — a grinder. He’s extremely bright on all things football, an excellent communicator and always eager to learn more. He asks a lot of questions and writes everything down. I’ve always been impressed with his work ethic and his eagerness to learn more. He’ll be an excellent head coach without a doubt. He’s ready for this for sure,” Manning said.
When Broncos head coach John Fox was let go last offseason, Gase followed him to the Bears where he helped guide Jay Cutler to one of the best seasons of his career. While Cutler is sad to see him go, he’s glad that Gase is getting the opportunity to run his own team.
“I couldn’t be happier for Adam and his family,” Cutler said. “… I wish he could stay with us in Chicago but everyone has a journey and this is the next part of his. His work with quarterbacks is well documented and I know firsthand how good he is.”
There’s no doubt in my mind that it won’t take Gase long to have Ryan Tannehill among the best quarterbacks in the league, but it’ll be interesting to see how he handles the defense. Ndamukong Suh made waves on multiple occasions last season with his lack of effort and even reportedly saying that his defensive teammates weren’t good enough to play with him. If Gase can’t get Suh on board, it won’t matter how much Tannehill improves.
