By now, we have all heard the story of Robert Griffin III. Now, it looks like the third-year player’s Redskins career will be over as he is likely to be released by the team this offseason. Many teams will be interested in the young talent, but one dark horse team that could be an excellent landing spot for him is the Tennessee Titans.
This may confuse some at first, given that the Titans already have a young star in Marcus Mariota at the position, but Griffin would not be going to Tennessee to start. Before Griffin can be a starter, he needs to show the NFL that he still possesses the skillset he had earlier in his career.
Tennessee could use a new backup quarterback, a role that is suited for RG3 at this particular stage of his career. Zach Mettenberger is a fine player, but he was barely productive when filling in for Mariota this season. Some team may be interested in trading a late-round pick for him, and the Titans may want to sell high there. If they do make that move, they’ll be in the market for a new backup.
Since Griffin has a similar skillset to Mariota, so the team would not have to adjust the offense if Mariota were to miss time. Griffin could execute well in whatever offense they put around Mariota, and he would likely see a game or two of action over the season as Mariota has already missed time in his brief one-year career. Mobile quarterbacks tend to get hurt more easily, so it would be logical to have a top-notch backup behind Mariota.
Griffin would also make a lot of sense if the Titans bring in Chip Kelly as a head coach. It’s looking increasingly likely that only the San Francisco 49ers and the Titans are interested in Kelly, so if the Niners hire somebody else, Kelly could be Tennessee’s for the taking.
If all of these pieces fall into place, then the Titans should make Griffin one of their top targets in free agency. The team could use a backup with high upside, and it is highly unlikely that Griffin would get a chance to start somewhere next season anyway. It’s a partnership that would be mutually beneficial.
