The New York Giants are still looking for a head coach and plenty of so-so names have been officially thrown into the ring. One name hasn’t been talked about other than speculation on the internet, but that name should be contacted by the Giants’ brass. That person is Nick Saban.
Off the bat, let it be known that is an extreme longshot to pry Saban from Alabama. He has incredible success there and could run for mayor or Governor down there. However that could also be an argument for him to leave. What else does Saban have to prove at the college level? There really is nowhere else to go. He’s hit the pinnacle. Now for the professional level, Saban failed in his two years there.
For as competitive of a guy as Saban is, that probably irks him to the core. Is that a viable reason to leave his great job now? No, but it certainly is something that i’m sure he wishes he could fix. It’s in his fiery nature to win. Anyone could presume that Saban would love to get back in the NFL and prove that he is a legendary coach at any level. I would certainly put in a call and at least see what he is thinking.
The Giants need to make a big splash with this hire because things have become a bit gloomy for fans of late. No offense to guys like Doug Marrone, Mike Smith or even Hue Jackson, but they aren’t names that will wow you. Although Saban doesn’t quite fit the criteria as a proven professional coach, he certainly brings plenty of credentials and a wow-factor to the team. There is no questioning the coaching ability he brings to the table. Look at his onside kick call in the National Championship game. It’s calls like that which could really bring back the Giant franchise to where it belongs.
In the end there is probably very little chance of this pipe dream coming true, but you just never know. That is why the owners must at least check in with Saban. They owe it to themselves to inquire. Saban may at least be willing to have a discussion about it and perhaps could be swayed. You don’t know unless you try.
