The St. Louis Rams will officially be the “St. Louis” Rams no more. It was reported today that the Rams would be given permission to relocate to Los Angeles by the NFL owners. A vote of 30-2 passed in favor of the Rams’ plan to build a stadium in Inglewood, California and move to LA in 2016. The stadium will not be done until 2019, but the team will still make the move by next fall.
With all that said, the team needs to ensure that they have a competitive team on the field next season. After all, they are going to be looking to impress a new fanbase, so having a strong team is going to be important. The major weakness on the Rams right now is at the quarterback position, as Case Keenum and Nick Foles are nothing more than career backups. They need to address the position for the move.
The Rams are going to be picking 18th in the NFL Draft, so it may not be easy for them to get a top notch quarterback. Connor Cook may be available at that juncture, but teams are not all that confident in his ability to lead a team and be accurate enough to be a solid NFL starter. The Rams would probably like to get their hands on one of the top two passers, Paxton Lynch and Jared Goff, but they would have to trade up to do so.
It may end up being worth the team’s while if they can move up for Goff. Goff went to California, so the fanbase out in LA would have a natural connection to him. Goff projects to be a good starter at the next level anyway, and he has the arm strength and accuracy to develop into a top ten quarterback. It would likely take a move into the top five to get Goff, but given the relative strength of the rest of the Rams’ roster, especially on defense, it might end up being a good investment.
The Rams may also look to free agency to solve their quarterbacking woes. It would be a lot harder, given that Sam Bradford will likely be the top option available (Kirk Cousins will probably be franchised by the Washington Redskins at the very least). The Rams traded Bradford last offseason, so they will likely have no interest in bringing him back.
The only intriguing name out there for the team would be Robert Griffin III. He would get the team good publicity, but it is hard to imagine that he would be able to take the team to the postseason, although he would be an upgrade over Foles and Keenum.
The Rams really just need to get a quarterback. The LA fanbase is going to want a good team to get excited about, and the Rams just do not have that right now without a quarterback. The team needs to figure out a way to add an impact player at the position, whether it is through the draft or free agency.
