The New York Giants have tabbed offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo as their next head coach. It’s not the big name, proven hire that was called for, but given the other finalists, he was the right hire at this moment.
Other finalists included Mike Smith, Doug Marrone and Teryl Austin. Had any of those three been hired there would be a good chance the Giants would have a fan riot on their hands. Those names would bring nothing to the table. Hue Jackson was another name thrown out there, one name that fans could probably get behind. However, he never even interviewed with the team before accepting an offer elsewhere.
With those guys you have an idea who they are and what you’ll get. To be harshly honest, it would just simply be average. With McAdoo, at least you get a bit of optimism that he could be a real solid head coach. In other words, his ceiling is higher than any other legit candidate. Perhaps what makes him best for this job was the endorsement he’s had from Eli Manning all along. If Manning made it public that he would be behind you as the hire, then it’s probably a good choice. Manning isn’t stupid — he knows football and this team.
The big thing here is maintaining continuity. The offense does not have to change. Manning, Odell Beckham Jr. and anyone else who is back next year will be in their third year of the same offense. That familiarity is huge and will make the transition so much easier. Instead of learning a new system over the camp season, they can jump right back into it. That is a huge plus with this hire. McAdoo is reported to bring in his former partner from the Green Bay Packers, Joe Philbin, as offensive coordinator.
Keeping it in the system with Philbin was a no-brainer. They had huge success in Green Bay when they were on the offensive staff together. McAdoo is the one who took over for Philbin as OC when he left for his own coaching job, so the offense is not going to be a problem at all.
In the end, the Giants probably got the best realistic man for the job. He’ll just have to prove he can handle the decision making and strategy that comes with being a head coach. He’ll have Philbin by his side to help with that, but most importantly, this is the best hire for the Giants’ two biggest assets. Manning and Beckham should love the choice.
