The San Diego Chargers may not be moving to Los Angeles just yet, but that does not mean that the team did not get some good news on Wednesday. It was reported that the Chargers agreed to a deal with Ken Whisenhunt to be their offensive coordinator after the team fired Frank Reich about a week ago. Whisenhunt was the Chargers’ offensive coordinator in 2013, and bringing him back was an excellent move for the team.
In Whisenhunt’s one season with the Chargers, the offense that he ran was terrific. The team went from being the second worst offense in the league to the fifth best. Under Whisenhunt, Philip Rivers had arguably the best season of his career, and his stat line for the season was impressive. He led the league with a 69.5 percent completion rate, threw for 4,478 yards, 32 touchdowns, and just 11 picks. The offense was a huge part of the reason that the Chargers were able to make the playoffs that season, and Whisenhunt had a major impact on their success.
Whisenhunt also brings a tremendous amount of experience to the Chargers. He has been a head coach two different times in the NFL. Most recently, he was with the Tennessee Titans for a year and a half, but his best work came with the Arizona Cardinals.
Whisenhunt led the Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII after a 9-7 season under the leadership of veteran quarterback Kurt Warner. The team ended up losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers, with who Whisenhunt won a Super Bowl with in 2005. Whisenhunt is a savvy veteran that is going to come back and be able to help Rivers get back into his prime with his great offensive scheme.
The Chargers made a great decision bringing back Whisenhunt. He has proven to be a successful coordinator at the NFL level, and while he was not a great head coach by any means, he has that experience which will be valuable for current coach Mike McCoy. There is no downside to bringing in Whisenhunt, and his familiarity with the team will only help their cause.
