Andy Reid is one of the worst clock managers in the NFL. While Reid is a very solid head coach, he cannot seem to wrap his head around the concept of clock management late in football games. Reid’s incompetence was once again on display during this game, as he ruined the Kansas City Chiefs’ chance of advancing to the AFC Championship Game.
This is essentially what happened. The Chiefs were down 27-13 with 6:29 left in the game. They had the ball and needed to score a touchdown. The team led a drive down the field but had absolutely no sense of urgency in doing so. They took a while to get plays called and that cost them a lot of time. They also ran too many plays on the drive, 16, but that is what should be expected from an Alex Smith run team.
Of course, the absolutely killer moment came after the two minute warning. Prior to the warning, the Chiefs had the ball at the one yard line and could not punch it in, wasting 33 seconds to get to the warning. After, the team had a false start then completed a pass in bounds to keep the clock moving. Instead of hustling to the line, the team actually huddled up and wasted 30 more seconds, which made their task of scoring twice nearly impossible. It was a horrible display from the team and they should be ashamed of themselves.
For Reid, this is nothing new. He has bungled clock management situations throughout the entirety of his career, and unless he can improve these issues, he may never win a title. Reid should have made sure that Smith had multiple plays ready coming out of the two minute warning, but evidently he did not do that. Reid needs to take the brunt of the responsibility for the loss, given that they had a chance to make a comeback with less than seven minutes left to play.
It was just hard to watch Reid throw the Chiefs’ chances away. The Chiefs could have had a shot at stealing the game from the New England Patriots, but they were unable to capitalize thanks to the poor clock management that plagued them at the end of the game.
