Bruce Arians‘ Arizona Cardinals hung around and out-slugged the Green Bay Packers for a thrilling postseason victory. This game featured multiple lead-changes and even another stunning Packers Hail Mary. While Green Bay is no pushover, Arians would have shouldered much of the blame had Arizona lost.
Known as an aggressive coach, Arians loves to put the nail in the coffin whenever he can. It’s good to have a coach with a warrior mentality, someone who wants to win rather than play it safe. But in the postseason, getting overly aggressive is detrimental at points.
Take for instance Arians’ late-game decision. With under three minutes to go, Arians elected to have Carson Palmer — who was incredibly erratic, by the way — try a pass to Larry Fitzgerald, which went incomplete. Deferring a run play in that situation was absurd. All Arizona needed to do was execute three straight running plays, drain the clock and kick the field goal.
Stopping the clock at that point preserved about 40 more seconds for the Packers. Had Green Bay not had those 40 seconds, the miraculous Hail Mary probably never has a chance to be attempted.
And now, that leads to discussing the Hail Mary. The defensive scheme Arians deployed was downright puzzling. Arizona blitzed and left their corners and safeties to play man-to-man. Aaron Rodgers heaved a deep pass and the game was soon tied. Those two coaching blunders could have easily squandered this game.
Arizona has the talent to go all the way, but senseless decisions like these can’t persist going forward. It’s hard enough to win games as it is, but illogical decisions only make things worse. Arians needs to harness his energy and put some of his aggression to the side. Otherwise, the Cardinals may find their Super Bowl dreams crushed.
