An injury-plagued and disappointing season made it likely that running back Marshawn Lynch played his final game for the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday, especially since he’ll turn 30 in April. But the plot got a bit thicker on Friday, with comments from Seahawks general manager John Schneider regarding Lynch’s future.
John Schneider on ESPN Seattle on Marshawn Lynch: “I’m under the impression he is leaning towards retirement.”

Retirement speculation surrounding Lynch is nothing new, with hints he was considering it in each of the last two offseasons, but the Seahawks pacified him by giving him a new contract that increased the money he would earn this season. Head coach Pete Carroll‘s comments earlier this week hinted at the possibility the Seahawks would cut Lynch this offseason due to clearly diminished on-field returns and the $11.5 million salary cap hit he carries for 2016.
News that Lynch is considering retirement is not surprising, since he appears to consider everything outside of game day a chore. But Schneider’s clear comment that he expects Lynch to call it quits is a shock, and going public with that thought points to a Seahawks organization that is ready to move on from a lingering headache.
