Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning recently faced allegations involving using HGH from a man named Charlie Sly that was aired in a documentary on Al Jazeera. Sly was filmed saying that Manning was taking HGH prescribed by an Indianapolis anti-aging clinic and having the doses shipped to his wife, Ashley. The Washington Post was able to uncover more of the story.
Prior to the allegations becoming public, Manning was contacted through his agent Tom Condon by Al Jazeera to let them know that they were going to air the documentary. Manning then hired private investigators to discover who it was that had been making up these false allegations and it led them to Sly.
Sly recanted everything he said in the video the day after Manning’s investigators met with him. Although the timing certainly seemed questionable, his lawyer Travis Cohron said the recanting was his client’s decision as he stated that everything in the video was a complete lie and that he was trying to make himself look good in front of Al Jazeera’s undercover reporter who he thought was a potential business partner.
“It was pure puffery,” Cohron said of Sly’s words. “He was manufacturing a story to bolster his own appearance.”
Manning has since hired Ari Fleischer as a crisis management consultant and while the majority of the story has been rebuffed, Fleischer did confirm that HGH was sent to Ashley Manning.
