The third time’s the charm for former Indianapolis Colts receiver Marvin Harrison. After coming up short in the two years prior, Harrison obtained the needed votes to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this time. The 13-year pro had quite a career with the Colts and definitely earned this tremendous honor to be recognized as one of the game’s elite players.
Harrison’s statistics speak for themselves, with 1,102 receptions for 14,580 receiving yards and 128 receiving touchdowns in his career. Currently, he is ranked in the top 10 of all three of these career categories. He also set the NFL record for the most receptions in a single season with 143 in 2002 and is the only receiver in NFL history to have eight straight seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns.
There was some small outrage that Harrison made the Hall of Fame over Terrell Owens this year, whose statistics are on par with Harrison. While Harrison had 24 more career receptions than Owens, T.O. had 1,500 more receiving yards and 15 more touchdowns in his career than Harrison. For this reason, people felt Owens should have gotten the nod over Harrison.
While the outrage is understandable, people need to realize Owens is in the same situation as Harrison from two years ago. In 2013, the selection committee passed over a first-time eligible Harrison to induct Andre Reed. They also passed over Harrison for Tim Brown in 2014. The selection committee rarely inducts two players who played the same position in the same year. As a result, they usually select the player who has been waiting longer, which was Harrison this year. Owens’ time will come, but 2016 was not his year. As one of the 10 best receivers in NFL history, it is great to see the former Colts wideout get the recognition he deserves.
