After making the playoffs in 2015 with a mixture of Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, T.J. Yates and Brandon Weeden playing quarterback, the Houston Texans are desperately looking for someone to take the job by the horns. According to reports, that someone could be former Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler.
Osweiler made seven starts for the Broncos in 2015 and threw for 1,967 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. The Broncos have reportedly offered him a three-year, $45 million deal to remain with the team, but he’s decided to hit free agency. If he were to leave Denver, it would put John Elway in a bad spot as Peyton Manning has announced that he’s retiring.
As for the Texans, Osweiler would be a significant upgrade over that class of quarterbacks they had last season. He would give the offense a boost and take some pressure off of J.J. Watt and the defense which would make things easier on the entire team. Although Arian Foster was just released, the Texans want to run the ball first which would be the ideal system for a young guy like Osweiler.
It’s also entirely possible that Osweiler doesn’t end up with either of these teams, but it would be in his best interest to do so. Both teams are built around running the ball and playing great defense which would alleviate some of the pressure of coming in and being the focal point of the offense right away. Osweiler would be allowed to play a game manager role and get some more experience before needing to be the man in either offense.
