The Houston Texans have themselves a new quarterback after signing Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million deal. The Texans seemed to have a new starting quarterback every other week in 2015, with Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, T.J. Yates and Brandon Weeden all attempting at least 40 passes. Osweiler should give the Texans stability at the position moving forward, but the deal is far from a guaranteed home run.
Few free agent quarterbacks has the potential that Osweiler has. Considering what a marginal quarterback is this offseason (ie. Sam Bradford), the Texans probably aren’t overpaying for Osweiler. However, they are putting a lot of money into a quarterback that has only seven career starts.
Osweiler filled in for an injured Peyton Manning last season and completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 1967 yards, with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He had been considered the quarterback of the future for the Broncos, but will now join DeAndre Hopkins and recent free agent addition Lamar Miller to form a young core in Houston that should help the team compete in the NFC South right away.
More importantly, Osweiler could develop into the franchise quarterback the Texans have been looking for since they made David Carr their first pick in franchise history. To that end, Osweiler certainly has the physical gifts. He is listed at 6-foot-7 and has a very good arm. There was enough there for the Broncos to take him in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
It might take Osweiler a little while to develop into a quarterback worth $72 million, but the Texans could use a known quantity at the position, and Osweiler should at least provide that this coming season.
