The New York Giants spent big on the first day of free agency, netting Damon Harrison, Janoris Jenkins and Olivier Vernon. They also brought back Jason Pierre-Paul just before the start of free agency. Even though the Giants spent a large chunk of their over $50 million in cap space, they are far from done in free agency and could be signing middle linebacker Keenan Robinson.
Robinson has had his share of injuries since being selected by the Washington Redskins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, he suffered a torn right pectoral muscle in Week 12. In 2013, he suffered a torn left pectoral muscle in training camp and missed the entire season as a result. In 2014, he was named the starter after London Fletcher retired. He appeared in 13 games and recorded 109 total tackles, netted 1.5 sacks, recovered one fumble and intercepted one pass. His one interception came against the Giants and Eli Manning.
Last season, Robinson had a bit of a down year. He recorded only 63 tackles in 12 games as injuries once again prevented him from playing a full season. He also picked off Tom Brady for his second career interception.
Robinson is what Jerry Reese looks for in linebackers in free agency. They need to be young enough to still have some upside and show an ability to produce. Robinson’s big issue has been his health. He has yet to appear in a full 16-game schedule but his 2014 season showed plenty of upside if given the chance.
Reese looks for linebackers who can be had without breaking the bank while offering a great chance for improvement. Think of J.T. Thomas and Jonathan Casillas from last season. Casillas was second on the team in tackles while Thomas struggled, but these are the type of veteran guys Reese looks for. Robinson would certainly fit that category.
Adding Robinson would make the Giants’ linebacking corps a little deeper. He won’t make anyone forget about Antonio Pierce, but he could be a solid addition to a remade Giants defense and play an important role next year if he can stay healthy. So far numbers have been exchanged according to several reports but a deal might not be close. There is no doubt the Giants are interested at this point, though, and it could be only a matter of time before Robinson is the newest member of the team.
