In a case of bad judgement, and bad timing, former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott was arrested and cited for a DUI early Saturday morning in Starkville, Mississippi.
Further reporting from the Clarion Ledger has suggested Prescott was initially pulled over for speeding.
The incident occurred less than 48 hours after Mississippi State’s Pro Day for NFL teams, and Prescott has already issued an apology through Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. He may fall down or completely off the draft boards of some teams now, but Dane Brugler of CBSSports.com does not expect a freefall for Prescott and I agree with him at this point.
Based on talent level, Prescott is in the second-tier of quarterbacks in this year’s draft class, which makes him a likely second day pick. It’s hard to see that changing dramatically now, unless more damning information comes out about this DUI arrest, since it appears Prescott is apparently fairly well-regarded as a person by teams that have had interest in him to this point.
Draft history is filled with players who fell due to an ill-timed mistake, but still had a productive NFL career. The main fallout of this DUI arrest for Prescott is clear, with the likelihood teams will try to kick over rocks in his background to find more potential red flags.
If there isn’t anything significant to see in terms of off-field concerns, then Prescott will be drafted as he would have been a week ago. But if there is something to be found, or there is more to this DUI story, then Prescott will probably fall significantly and lose a lot of money come draft time.
