There is no question that the New York Giants need to use the 2016 NFL Draft to fill some holes on their roster. Despite their free agent spending spree, there are still some significant holes to plug and the Giants are in prime position to fill one hole with a player who can step in right away and contribute. GM Jerry Reese needs to make sure he hits a home run with this pick and the Giants have been linked to several prospects, including UCLA linebacker Myles Jack.
Jack is one of the better linebacker prospects in this draft. He would be able to step in immediately and upgrade the Giants at either inside or outside linebacker, though Jack might be better suited outside. He has strong coverage skills and can hang with running backs and tight ends. He even covered some slot receivers in college, but it is doubtful he can do that in the NFL.
He checked in at 6-foot-1, 245 pounds which is a nice blend of size to go with his athletic ability. Although he didn’t participate in the combine due to a knee injury, Jack has been given full clearance and should have no issues when it comes to participating in camp. In fact, the knee injury is the only real weakness in his game it seems.
Watching Jack on film shows you a player who seems to be everywhere on the field. He is strong against the run, excellent in coverage and is developing as a pass rusher. His pass rush skills are probably never going to be a strong suit for him, but he can still get to the quarterback occasionally.
The Giants could use a player like Jack. He will be a star in the NFL as long as he stays healthy. There is the issue, his health. The Giants are trying to make the playoffs this season. Will Reese take a chance on a player coming off of a major ACL injury? Will the Giants take a linebacker in the first round for the first time since 1984?
There are few players who will be able to step onto a field this season and make an impact right away. Jack is one of those, as long as he gets on the field. The Giants could do a lot worse than taking Jack with the No. 10 overall pick, if he is there.
