Baylor TE LaQuan McGowan Could Be Heaviest Player Drafted In NFL History

The pro day circuit leading up to the 2016 NFL Draft is in full swing, and teams recently went to Baylor to take a closer look at the prospects coming out of that school. Wide receiver Corey Coleman and defensive tackle Andrew Billings are possible first-round picks, and a few others are in line to be drafted (offensive lineman Spencer Drango, defensive end Shawn Oakman, cornerback Xavien Howard) but tight end LaQuan McGowan may wind up with some notoriety of his own when the draft is over.

McGowan measured at 6-foot-6 and weighed in at 405 pounds at Baylor’s Pro Day. And according to NFL.com, he also posted a 24-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot-2 broad jump and put up 30 bench press reps (225 pounds). Those are impressive numbers for a man of his size, which is noteworthy by itself. Gil Brandt of NFL.com indicated that no player at any pro day has ever weighed as much as McGowan.

The heaviest player in NFL history is former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Aaron Gibson, who weighed as much as 410 pounds during his career. But he weighed in at 386 pounds at the 1999 scouting combine, so McGowan would be the heaviest player drafted in league history if he is selected.

McGowan had enough athleticism to play tight end in Baylor’s gadget-filled offense, but his future in the NFL looks sure to be as an offensive lineman. It’s unclear if he’ll be drafted, due in part to not being invited to this year’s combine, but McGowan should land somewhere as a developmental prospect and his effort to make a final 53-man roster as a rookie will be worth watching.
