With the New York Giants having a glaring need for a No. 2 wide receiver, a lot of draft experts have them filling that void with the No. 10 overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. That would be a huge mistake for the Giants.
This draft is severely lacking in talent at the wide receiver position. Laquon Treadwell might be the best receiver in the draft, though a big case can be made for Josh Doctson or Corey Coleman. Treadwell is often picked to the Giants in mock drafts, but that just isn’t going to happen.
Treadwell might very well go on to have a nice NFL career, but he isn’t a top-10 pick. You don’t take a No. 2 receiver with the No. 10 overall pick in a draft. You go for the best player available, especially if that position is one of need, and the Giants have plenty of needs outside of a No. 2 wide receiver.
Adding to the defense has been a huge priority for the Giants this offseason. They have added Janoris Jenkins, Damon Harrison, Olivier Vernon and Keenan Robinson to a unit that ranked dead last in the NFL last year. Despite re-signing Jason Pierre-Paul and signing Vernon, the Giants could still use some help at defensive end, and they figure to have a shot at some of the best defensive end prospects in the draft where they are. Pierre-Paul is only signed to a one-year deal, so adding some young, inexpensive talent there should be a priority.
The Giants also lack talent at linebacker. They did sign Robinson, but he is an unknown commodity and isn’t a long-term solution unless he somehow has a breakout year. There are several good linebackers in this draft with Myles Jack, Leonard Floyd and Reggie Ragland among the better prospects.
Offensive line has been something the Giants have made a priority in recent drafts. They drafted Justin Pugh in the first round in 2013, Weston Richburg in the second round of the 2014 draft and made Ereck Flowers their first pick in 2014. They also have high hopes for 2015 seventh-rounder Bobby Hart. They could easily add a tackle if one of the better tackle prospects like Ronnie Stanley or Jack Conklin falls to them. Laremy Tunsil would be perfect, but he isn’t falling to the Giants.
There are so many needs ahead of a No. 2 receiver that the Giants would be foolish to take one with their first pick. Even cornerback is more pressing than a receiver. If one of the top corners falls to them, they would be hard-pressed to pass given the fact that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was banged up a lot last year and there isn’t much depth at the position.
With so many holes at more important positions the Giants aren’t going to take a No. 2 receiver in Round 1. It’s time to stop mocking Treadwell to the Giants.
