The praise for former Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott just keeps pouring in, as analysts continue to vault the ball carrier up their draft boards. Given that Todd Gurley last year was the first back taken in the top-20 picks since Trent Richardson went No. 3 overall in 2012, it would seem that the devaluation of the running back has all but been validated. After all, the team that took Richardson (sorry, Cleveland) surely wishes they had a do-over, and Gurley didn’t exactly carry the St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams to the postseason last year either.
Still, that hasn’t stopped Mel Kiper Jr. and his glorious hair from pushing Elliott up all the way to No. 6 overall to the Baltimore Ravens in his latest mock. Many have even favorably compared the Buckeye to the top running back in the NFL at present, Adrian Peterson.
What all of this means is that teams looking for their savior in the backfield may need to go back to the future when it comes to evaluating running backs. Elliott is set to visit the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins, which select Nos. 8, 11 and 13 overall, respectively, in the upcoming draft.
Miami makes the most sense as a destination, given that last year’s top back, Lamar Miller, is now a member of the Houston Texans and Jay Ajayi is the top rusher on their depth chart. But the Eagles have to be concerned with just an aging Darren Sproles and injury-prone Ryan Mathews at present, and the Bears have just Jeremy Langford now after allowing veteran Matt Forte to sign with the New York Jets this offseason.
However you want to look at things, it seems like the running back is making a comeback in popularity among NFL general managers. Look for Elliott to last no longer than No. 13 overall on April 28, with the top 10 being more than possible as well given his skyrocketing draft stock.
