While it may seem like a ploy by Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson to drum up interest in his team’s No. 1 overall pick in the fast-approaching 2016 NFL Draft, it’s hard not to believe the GM when he says that trade interest is increasing as the annual selection festivity nears.
Robinson told USA Today:
“I would say that with each day we inch closer to the draft, the discussions probably become a little bit more serious, if you will. That’s something we’re going back and forth with. Do we stay put with where we’re at, or do we really entertain the thought of moving? I would say the interest has increased some. I wouldn’t say there are 31 teams calling, but there are certainly teams that have interest in moving up.”
Vague though it may be, this certainly suggests that some teams may be trying to jump the Cleveland Browns, a team basically resigned to taking a QB at No. 2, in hopes of having their own choice of the top signal-caller in the draft. The funny thing is it’s hard to really find a consensus on just which guy, between Jared Goff and Carson Wentz, is the top overall quarterback.
A number of teams would make sense as potential trade-up partners, with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills chief among them. While it would seem to make more sense for the Niners or Eagles, at Nos. 7 and 8 overall respectively, to stay put given that Cleveland is the only team likely to take a QB early, if either franchise feels as though the Browns are eyeing their preferred choice between Wentz and Goff, perhaps the risk would be worth the reward to move up.
There’s no doubt the Titans want to move down, with Marcus Mariota entrenched as their starter for the long haul, so this won’t be the last time a trade is mentioned over the next three weeks.
