The Cleveland Browns have long been expected to take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. It’s the one position that the franchise has continuously struggled to find consistency and it’s the most important spot on the field.
On Tuesday, new reports suggested that the Browns haven’t been considering a quarterback at No. 2 and that they’re actually shopping the pick.
Browns have engaged in trade talks but it remains, in words of one team official, “uncertain” whether they ultimately will trade No. 2 pick.

Reports: Browns ‘actively shopping’ No. 2, never planned to draft a QBhttps://t.co/VTKKwZoQO2pic.twitter.com/KA5yjGG1Rk

I’ll buy that the Browns are actively shopping the pick, because that’s a perfectly logical thing to do. The roster is poor across the board and getting a quarterback without any protection or weapons to throw to makes no sense. Trading back would allow them to fill more holes as they gather more picks.
I don’t, however, believe that they were never considering taking a quarterback. I think they were very much in on Jared Goff, but last week’s trade between the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams kind of put the nail in that coffin. The Browns know that the Rams are probably going to take Goff which would then force them to take Carson Wentz who they aren’t as high on.
The Browns seem set on starting Robert Griffin III for at least 2016, if not longer, which would allow them to possibly take a Cardale Jones or Connor Cook in the second round as opposed to spending a high pick on someone like Wentz who’s probably going to need just as much time to sit and develop.
One thing’s for sure — whatever direction Hue Jackson and the new front office goes in, this draft will go a long way in deciding their long-term fate with the organization.
